The Aghanashini River, from the series Along Our Western Shores

By Aubrey Wade

A fisherman sets his nets at dawn on the Aghanashini River, in Karnataka State, India. One of the last entirely free-flowing rivers in the World, its rich estuary environment supports the livelihoods of local communities who fish, harvest clams and oysters, and depend on its precious ecosystem in myriad ways. It is under threat from the development of a container port. From the series, Along Our Western Shores, which explores marine pollution on India's western coast, and efforts to combat it.
